Talking the Talk: An Interview with Danielle Angeloni

We're back with a new edition of Talking the Talk. This interview features one of the collective's newest members, Danielle Angeloni. Read on to find out more about this San Diego new-comer!

LB: Thank you for being a member of the Lady Brain Collective! What inspired or motivated you to join?

DA: As a new member of the San Diego community, I am hoping to meet new people, collaborate, and grow. I love the focus of Lady Brain and want to not only give to a cause I believe in, but also benefit from being lifted and lifting up other womxn!

LB: How would you describe your art in three emojis?

DA: 🌞 🌚 🌊 

LB: What are some common themes or topics that show up regularly in your songwriting?

DA: Nature, connection, and elements (fire, water, air, earth).

LB: What are your thoughts on the San Diego music scene? Which local stages and/or festivals would you like to book in the near future?

DA: I am very new to the scene! I’d eventually love to play stages like Panama 66 and The Music Box.

LB: We believe in speaking goals and dreams into reality. What are some thing you’d really like to accomplish over the course of your career?

DA: I’d really love to write songs that are placed in movies/TV and tour internationally at some point. 

Tell us about your day job as a music therapist. What is something people would be surprised to learn about this field? What do you find most rewarding about the job?

​DA: I currently work with special education in public schools. My job consists of collaborating and consulting daily with therapists of other disciplines such as speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists. When I work with these other therapists, I am focusing on specific goals for a student (for example learning to count to 100 or writing their name) and demonstrating ways to use music therapy techniques to advance the student’s progress. The most rewarding part of this job for me is watching students engage in music and have fun while meeting their goals. 

LB: Imagine someone is reading this article and learning about you for the first time...what song/project would you direct them to for the best/most accurate representation of who you are as an artist?

DA: I would say check out my website and there you’ll find my EP I released in 2017. In addition to writing and co-writing the music and lyrics, I also co-produced the EP. It really sounds like what I heard in my head when it was a mere dream. I am currently writing new music which you can find on Instagram or YouTube.

LB: Who is inspiring you at the moment?

DA: I really love Maggie Rogers, Emily King, Phoebe Bridges, and Jade Bird right now. There seems to be a resurgence of the 90’s Lilith Faire movement where a lot of strong female songwriters are coming out of the woodwork (in my point of view anyway).
 
LB: What is challenging you at the moment and how does it inform your art?

DA: I struggle with finding a creative flow! I have a week or two of pouring out music like a fountain, and then I get too comfortable and stop. I am currently working on consistency. As a result I’ve been writing songs that sound very different from each other. 

LB: A lot of indie artists are accustomed to the DIY life, acting as their own publicist, booking agent, manager, producer, web/graphic designer, social media manager, etc. Which “hats” do you enjoy wearing, and which areas would you like more support?

DA: I enjoy writing, arranging, and producing. I’d love support in the ways of a booking agent, graphic designer, and social media manager. 

LB: Do you have any upcoming projects or events readers should be aware of?

DA: I am very excited to be performing as part of Lady Brain's Songwriter’s Book Club Takeover on 4/19. I also regularly visit open mics at Cafe 1134 in Coronado and You Belong Here in City Heights. I recently formed a band called Malachite Moon - follow us on Instagram to stay up to date with our events. 

LB: Anything else you’d like readers to know about?

DA: I love art of all kinds and want to meet you! I love collaborating and writing songs for videos and short films, so please don’t hesitate to reach out.

LB: Who are some other local womxn creators the San Diego community should be aware of?
